Impact of cooled compressed air and high-speed cutting on the drilling of hybrid composite-metal stacks

Hybrid composite-metal stacks (HCMS) combine metal alloys and composite materials are used in the manufacturing maintenance of aircrafts. Drilling is an important process necessary for installing rivets fuselages. This work sought to identify influence cooled compressed air high-speed cutting (HSC) on drilling multi-material joints with different configurations. Among factors observed type (carbon- or glass-fiber-reinforced polymer), joint 2024 aluminum alloy (simple composed), presence absence air, speed (40 220 m/min), feed rate (0.02 0.08 mm/rev) HCMS drilling. Adjusted delamination factor, hole-wall roughness, hole roundness, thrust force were evaluated. The combined effect between did not significantly impact defects generated, making it possible use HSC without harming joint. Cooled showed a tendency decrease
